I remember the aromatic scent of meandering pathways through soaring old growth forests and dense tropical jungles and the taste of crisp, clean air.  I recall the initial sound and slightly increasing volume that's forever attached to approaching a hidden stream and recognize my heart racing with joy and expectation of what unknown majesty lies imminently ahead.

Located 25 miles east of Salem in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Silver Falls State Park is known as the crown jewel of the Oregon state parks system, and rightfully so.  The 9,200-acre property is the largest and most popular state park in Oregon and contains 10 spectacular waterfalls - five of which are more than one hundred feet tall.

Located near Liberia, Costa Rica, Rincon de la Vieja National Park boasts an active volcano, natural hot springs, gorgeous waterfalls, and excellent hiking trails. In stark contrast to other areas of Costa Rica with much cooler, wet climates, Rincon de la Vieja is hot, dry, and arid.  It's surprising to find spectacular waterfalls in this atmosphere but there are several beauties that stand out.
